Belize 2013: Beauty and the Beach

No need to go hunting for the perfect souvenir...they came to us. In the course of about 3 hours, Dani and I purchased woven turtle baskets, a carved wooden bowl from Gilbert, several ornate Guatemalan textiles from our local Mayan friend, Sonja, and some coconut sweets from children selling along the beach.

Mornings come early on San Pedro...we were up just after 5am. Dani went for a swim and I wandered the empty beach front and main street to photograph the town without the onslaught of golf carts and tourists. Beauty was everywhere, in both the colorful shop fronts and the sweeping grandeur of the sea. Afterwards, we dragged our lounge chairs up to the water's edge and wonderfully wasted away the morning.

I must admit, I was a bit squeamish at first to wander out along the reef - not really good with the things creeping around my feet underneath. But I braved the waters and made it to the little "swimming hole" at the end of the pier. The sky was blue, the sun was hot and by the afternoon, the water felt like a warm bath.

We ventured out in the evening to the highly recommended Reef Restaurant for dinner. Opting to try a bit of everything we got the fish platter to share - lobster, shrimp, crab, sole and conch (tastes like calamari). Prices are rather steep here on the island, but I think we got our $40's worth. Next time, however, we will opt for more simple local fare.
